Aching throat – Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment at Emirates Hospitals Group

Aching throat, commonly referred to as a sore throat, is a frequent ailment characterized by pain, irritation, or scratchiness in the throat. It can range from a mild, temporary discomfort to a more intense and persistent pain that makes swallowing difficult. While often a minor inconvenience, a persistent or severe sore throat can be quite bothersome and may indicate an underlying issue.

Causes

The most common causes of an aching throat include:

  • Viral infections: Viruses like the common cold, flu, or mononucleosis are frequent culprits, causing inflammation and discomfort in the throat.
  • Bacterial infections: Strep throat, caused by Streptococcus bacteria, is a common bacterial infection that leads to a sore throat, often accompanied by fever and swollen tonsils.
  • Allergies: Seasonal allergies or allergies to dust, pet dander, or mold can irritate the throat lining, resulting in a sore throat.
  • Dry air: Dry air, especially during winter months, can dry out the throat and make it feel scratchy and sore.
  • Environmental irritants: Exposure to smoke, pollution, or other irritants can inflame the throat and cause pain.
  • Acid reflux: Stomach acid backing up into the esophagus can irritate the throat and cause a burning sensation.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing the cause of an aching throat typically involves:

  • Medical history: A doctor will inquire about symptoms, their duration, and any other accompanying symptoms.
  • Physical exam: The doctor will examine the throat, tonsils, and surrounding areas for redness, swelling, or white spots.
  • Rapid strep test: If strep throat is suspected, a rapid strep test can quickly determine if it’s present.
  • Throat culture: In some cases, a throat culture may be performed to confirm the presence of strep bacteria or other bacterial infections.

Treatment

Treatment for an aching throat depends on the underlying cause:

  • Home remedies: Gargling with warm salt water, drinking warm liquids, using lozenges, and resting can soothe a sore throat caused by viral infections or irritants.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers: Pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Antibiotics: If the sore throat is caused by a bacterial infection like strep throat, antibiotics will be prescribed.
  • Allergy medication: If allergies are contributing to the sore throat, antihistamines or other allergy medications may be recommended.

If your sore throat is severe, persists for more than a few days, is accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, or other concerning symptoms, it’s important to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
