Anxiety– Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment at Emirates Hospitals Group

Anxiety is a natural human response to stress, but when it becomes excessive or persistent, it can significantly impact daily life. It manifests in various ways, including persistent worry, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances. Physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath can also occur.

Several factors can contribute to anxiety disorders. Genetics play a role, as some individuals are predisposed to anxiety. Brain chemistry and function can also be involved. Environmental factors, such as traumatic experiences, stressful life events, and learned behaviors, can trigger or exacerbate anxiety. Certain medical conditions and substance use can also contribute.

Diagnosing anxiety disorders involves a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional. This typically includes discussing symptoms, medical history, and performing a physical exam to rule out underlying medical causes. Mental health professionals may use specific diagnostic criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to identify the specific type of anxiety disorder. They may also employ psychological assessments and questionnaires.

Treatment for anxiety disorders usually involves a combination of approaches. Psychotherapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and

behaviors. Exposure therapy, a type of CBT, gradually exposes individuals to feared situations or objects to reduce their anxiety. Medications, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs, may be prescribed to regulate brain chemistry and alleviate symptoms. Lifestyle changes, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and stress management techniques like mindfulness and meditation, can also be beneficial in managing anxiety. It’s crucial to work closely with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment plan.
