Today’s case, which we just performed, is known as a scarless hysterectomy.

Traditionally, a classical hysterectomy was done as an open procedure, requiring a vertical incision. Later, surgeons began performing it with a lower transverse incision.

With the advancement of laparoscopic surgery, we were able to perform laparoscopic hysterectomies using three or four small ports.

As instrumentation improved, we can now complete the entire procedure through a single port, typically through the umbilicus.

This single-port approach proved to be very successful and has since evolved into being performed through a natural orifice — the vagina.
