Loud Snoring – Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment at Emirates Hospitals Group

Loud snoring occurs when airflow is partially obstructed during sleep, causing vibrations in the throat tissues. It is a common condition that can affect sleep quality and may indicate an underlying health issue, such as sleep apnea. Occasional snoring is usually harmless, but persistent, loud snoring may require medical attention.

Causes of Loud Snoring

  • Obstructed Airways: Nasal congestion, deviated septum, or swollen tonsils can restrict airflow, leading to snoring.
  • Obesity: Excess weight, especially around the neck, can put pressure on the airway, increasing the likelihood of snoring.
  • Sleep Apnea: A serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, often accompanied by loud snoring and gasping for air.
  • Sleeping Position: Sleeping on the back can cause the tongue and soft tissues to collapse into the throat, obstructing airflow.
  • Alcohol and Sedatives: These substances relax throat muscles, making airway obstruction more likely.
  • Aging: As muscles in the throat lose tone with age, snoring can become more frequent.

Diagnosis of Loud Snoring

Evaluation may include:

  • Medical History and Physical Examination: To identify risk factors such as nasal blockages or obesity.
  • Sleep Study (Polysomnography): Conducted in a sleep clinic or at home to assess breathing patterns and detect sleep apnea.
  • Imaging Tests: X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs may be used to check for structural abnormalities in the airway.

Treatment for Loud Snoring

Treatment depends on the cause and may include:

  • Lifestyle Changes: Weight loss, regular exercise, and avoiding alcohol before bedtime can reduce snoring.
  • Positional Therapy: Encouraging side sleeping instead of lying on the back.
  • Nasal Treatments: Decongestants, nasal strips, or allergy treatments can improve airflow.
  • Oral Appliances: Custom-fitted mouthpieces can help keep the airway open.
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP): For sleep apnea, a CPAP machine delivers air pressure to keep airways open.
  • Surgical Options: In severe cases, procedures like tonsil removal or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) may be recommended.

If loud snoring persists, a medical consultation is advised to rule out serious sleep disorders and improve sleep quality.
