Hypertension: Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment at Emirates Hospitals Group

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood against the artery walls remains consistently high. If left untreated, it can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

Causes of Hypertension

Hypertension is classified into two types:

  • Primary (Essential) Hypertension – Develops gradually over time with no identifiable cause but is influenced by genetics, aging, and lifestyle factors.
  • Secondary Hypertension – Caused by underlying conditions such as kidney disease, thyroid disorders, adrenal gland problems, or certain medications.

Common risk factors include:

  • Unhealthy diet (high in salt and processed foods)
  • Obesity and lack of physical activity
  • Excessive alcohol and tobacco use
  • Chronic stress
  • Family history of hypertension

Diagnosis of Hypertension

Hypertension is diagnosed through:

  • Blood pressure readings – Consistently measuring 140/90 mmHg or higher indicates high blood pressure.
  • Laboratory tests – Blood and urine tests check for underlying conditions like kidney disease or diabetes.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) & Echocardiogram – Used to assess heart health if complications are suspected.

Hypertension Treatments in Dubai

Regular monitoring and early intervention are key to preventing complications. If you experience symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or chest pain, consult a doctor for proper evaluation and management. Managing hypertension involves lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medications.

  • Lifestyle Modifications:
    • Healthy diet – Reducing salt, processed foods, and increasing fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
    • Regular exercise – At least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days.
    • Weight management – Maintaining a healthy weight to reduce strain on the heart.
    • Limiting alcohol & quitting smoking – Helps lower blood pressure levels.
  • Medications:
    • Diuretics – Help remove excess salt and water.
    • Beta-blockers & ACE inhibitors – Lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels.
    • Calcium channel blockers – Prevent arteries from narrowing.
