Foul-Tasting Drainage into the Mouth – Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment
Foul-Tasting Drainage into the Mouth – Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment in Dubai at Emirates Hospitals Group
Overview
Foul-tasting drainage in the mouth is often due to infections, sinus issues, or gastrointestinal reflux. It may be accompanied by bad breath, a persistent bad taste, or throat discomfort.
Causes
- Sinus Infections (Sinusitis) – Bacterial infections can cause mucus drainage into the throat, leading to a bad taste.
- Post-Nasal Drip – Excess mucus from allergies or colds can drain into the throat, causing an unpleasant taste.
- Dental Infections – Abscessed teeth, gum disease, or infected tonsils can produce foul-tasting pus drainage.
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) – Acid reflux can cause stomach acid to enter the throat, resulting in a sour or bitter taste.
- Tonsil Stones – Hardened debris in the tonsils can release a bad taste and odor.
Diagnosis
- Medical History & Examination – A doctor checks for signs of sinus or dental infections.
- Nasal Endoscopy – Used to examine nasal passages for infection or post-nasal drip.
- Dental Checkup – Dentists assess for gum disease, abscesses, or tonsil stones.
- pH Monitoring or Endoscopy – If GERD is suspected, these tests evaluate acid reflux.
Treatment Options
- Treating the Underlying Cause – Antibiotics for infections, antihistamines for allergies, or acid-reducing medications for GERD.
- Saline Nasal Rinse – Helps clear sinus mucus and reduce post-nasal drip.
- Good Oral Hygiene – Brushing, flossing, and gargling with mouthwash can prevent dental infections and tonsil stones.
- Hydration & Dietary Changes – Drinking water and avoiding acidic or spicy foods can help manage GERD-related symptoms.
If symptoms persist, medical evaluation is needed to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
