Eye Protrusion or Bulging – Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment at Emirates Hospital Group

Eye protrusion, medically known as exophthalmos or proptosis, is when one or both eyes appear to bulge out of their sockets. This symptom can be associated with various underlying causes and related conditions:

Causes of Eye Protrusion or Bulging

  1. Thyroid Eye Disease (TED): Often linked to Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder, TED leads to inflammation and swelling of the eye tissues, resulting in proptosis.
  2. Orbital Cellulitis: Infections affecting the eye socket, such as orbital cellulitis, can cause swelling and protrusion due to the accumulation of pus or inflammation.
  3. Orbital Tumors: Tumors within the eye socket can exert pressure on the eye, causing it to bulge. Both benign and malignant tumors may be implicated.
  4. Trauma and Injury: Severe trauma or injury to the eye or surrounding structures can disrupt the normal position of the eye, leading to protrusion.
  5. Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis: A blood clot in the cavernous sinus, a vein at the base of the brain, may impede blood drainage from the eye socket, resulting in proptosis.
  6. Vascular Anomalies: Abnormalities in blood vessels, such as arteriovenous malformations, can contribute to eye protrusion by altering blood flow in the orbital region.

Prompt medical evaluation is essential when eye protrusion occurs, as it can be indicative of serious underlying conditions requiring specialized care and intervention.
