Eye pain and discomfort can range from mild to severe and can be caused by a variety of factors.

Causes of Eye Pain and Discomfort

Dry Eyes

Dry eyes, also known as dry eye syndrome, is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This can cause a variety of symptoms, including eye pain, discomfort, burning, redness, and sensitivity to light.

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the whites of the eyes and the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies. Symptoms of conjunctivitis include eye pain, redness, discharge, and itching.

Corneal Abrasion

A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. It can be caused by a fingernail, a piece of dirt or debris, or even a contact lens. Symptoms of a corneal abrasion include eye pain, sensitivity to light, and redness.

Iritis

Iritis is an inflammation of the iris, the colored part of the eye. It can be caused by infection, injury, or an autoimmune disorder. Symptoms of iritis include eye pain, sensitivity to light, redness, and blurred vision.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, the nerve that carries information from the eye to the brain. It is a leading cause of blindness. Symptoms of glaucoma include eye pain, headaches, and blurred vision.

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses, the air-filled cavities in the bones around the nose and eyes. It can cause eye pain, especially around the bridge of the nose and upper cheeks.

Migraines

Migraines are a type of headache that can be accompanied by eye pain, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light.

Other Causes

Other less common causes of eye pain and discomfort include:

  • Uveitis: A Inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye.
  • Scleritis: A Inflammation of the sclera, the white part of the eye.
  • Retinal detachment:  A separation of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If you are experiencing eye pain, especially if it is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, you should see an eye doctor immediately

  • Severe Eye Pain
  • Sudden Vision Loss
  • Redness or Discharge from the Eye
  • Sensitivity to Light
  • Headaches
  • Nausea and Vomiting

Early diagnosis and treatment of eye problems can help prevent vision loss.
