The Hip Replacement Surgery

During THA surgery, the damaged components of the hip joint are replaced with artificial implants, usually made from a combination of metal alloys, high-grade plastics, and durable polymers. The surgery typically lasts around an hour, back can be anywhere from 1-2 hours. It is performed under general or spinal anesthesia. At Emirates our Orthopedics Team are experts in pain management to ensure you are comfortable throughout.

Our surgeon makes an incision strategically placed around the hip joint for optimal access to the area. Damaged bone and cartilage are carefully removed, while preserving healthy bone tissue. The surgeon then positions the prosthetic components – a metal cup replacing the worn-out acetabulum (socket) in the pelvis, and a femoral stem with a ball-shaped head that fits within the cup, replacing the damaged femoral head (ball of the thigh bone). At Emirates we only use tried and tested internationally recognized brands for our hip replacement components. These components are secured with specialized techniques such as bone cement or the press-fit method. Once implanted, the surrounding tissues are repaired and the incision is closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Hip Replacement, also called Hip Arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased hip joint with an artificial joint made of metal, plastic, or ceramic materials.

A hip replacement is usually recommended when the hip joint is severely damaged or arthritic (stage 4 arthritis), causing pain, stiffness, causing trouble sleeping and reduced mobility (especially reduced activities around normal daily life) that cannot be managed with non-surgical treatments.

The best age for a hip replacement depends on the individual circumstances and factors.  Although a Hip Replacement is often viewed as a procedure for the elderly, it depends on the severity of the hip joint damage, overall health, and lifestyle goals one wants to achieve or maintain.

The risks associated with hip replacement surgery may include infection, blood clots, dislocation of the new joint, nerve damage, and loosening or wearing out of the implant over time. However, with modern techniques and materials, joints now last longer and the risks of complications are reduced.

At Emirates Hospitals Joint Replacement Center, our UK & US Board, and subspeciality fellowship trained Hip Replacement Surgeons.  Dr Paul Jairaj, expert in complex and advanced hip replacement techniques such is 3D hip replacement is considered among the best hip replacement surgeons in Dubai, having conducted thousands of successful joint replacement surgeries.

Rapid recovery hip replacement, sometimes called day-case or same-day hip replacement, refers to a set of protocols that involves a minimally invasive approach, specialized implants if needed, and a comprehensive rehabilitation program to help patients mobilise and return to normal activities faster.

During the surgery you will not feel any pain due to the various pain management techniques used that include  general or regional anesthesia, nerve blocks etc. After the hip replacement surgery there may be some discomfort that will be managed with pain medications, but most patients experience significant pain relief and improved function after surgery.

Recovery from hip replacement surgery varies based on the individual. Every heals at a different rate, it can take several weeks or months and includes rehabilitation and physical therapy exercises.  It’s important not to rush, and to follow a treatment plan customised to you.
