The AF Ablation Procedure

During the AF ablation procedure, the patient is usually under conscious sedation or general anesthesia. The primary goal is to create scar tissue within the heart, which disrupts the abnormal electrical pathways responsible for the irregular heartbeats.

Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is a crucial part of the AF ablation procedure. The pulmonary veins carry blood from the lungs to the heart and are often the source of abnormal electrical impulses triggering AF. By isolating these veins with scar tissue, the unwanted electrical signals can be blocked.

Types of AF Ablation

Catheter ablation (most common) which involves inserting thin, flexible catheters through blood vessels, usually in the groin, and navigating them to the heart.  These catheters have electrodes at their tips, which can deliver energy (such as radiofrequency or cryotherapy) to create the desired scar tissue.
