A cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist are both heart specialists. A cardiologist possesses a broad skillset to diagnose and manage a wide range of heart conditions. This includes issues with the heart muscle itself, coronary arteries and valves. Common procedures performed by a cardiologist includes angioplasty and stent placement.

A cardiac electrophysiologist (EP) however is a specialist with a focus on the heart’s intricate electrical system and its impact on rhythm. They diagnose and treat arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). Techniques performed by EPs include ablation and pacemaker implantation. This additional training allows them to delve deeper into the heart’s electrical workings and address rhythm-related issues with greater precision.
