What is Lupus?

In the Lupus Clinic at Emirates Hospitals Group, we understand the challenges posed by lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues. This condition can cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body. There are several types of lupus, with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) being the most common and severe form.

Types of Lupus

  1. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) – The most common and severe type, SLE can affect multiple organs, including the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, and blood vessels. Symptoms vary widely and can include fatigue, joint pain, rashes, and serious complications like lupus nephritis.
  2. Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE) – A type of lupus that primarily affects the skin. It has several subtypes, including:
  • Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE): Causes round, scaly skin lesions that can lead to permanent scarring, often on the face and scalp.
  • Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (SCLE): Causes red, ring-shaped or scaly rashes on sun-exposed areas. These lesions are highly photosensitive but typically do not cause scarring.
  1. Drug-Induced Lupus (DIL) – A lupus-like condition triggered by certain medications, such as hydralazine, procainamide, isoniazid, and some biologics. Symptoms resemble SLE but are usually milder and resolve after stopping the medication.
  2. Neonatal Lupus – A rare condition that affects newborns due to the passive transfer of maternal autoantibodies (anti-Ro/SSA, anti-La/SSB). It can cause a temporary rash, liver abnormalities, and in some cases, congenital heart block, which may be permanent

Lupus Symptoms

Lupus can present with a wide range of symptoms, often mimicking other conditions, making early diagnosis challenging. Seeking medical advice at the first signs is crucial for effective management.

  • Joint Pain & Swelling – Persistent pain, stiffness (especially in the morning), and swelling in multiple joints.
  • Skin Rashes – A distinctive butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and nose, along with other skin rashes, often triggered by sun exposure.
  • Fatigue – Severe, persistent exhaustion that does not improve with rest.
  • Unexplained Fever – Low-grade fevers without an obvious infection or cause.
  • Organ Involvement – Symptoms may develop due to lupus affecting the kidneys (lupus nephritis), heart, lungs, or nervous system, leading to complications like chest pain, shortness of breath, or kidney dysfunction.

Accurate and Early Lupus Diagnosis

Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for developing an effective, personalized treatment plan. At our Lupus Clinic, we utilize a comprehensive diagnostic approach to accurately diagnose lupus. Our process includes:

  • Medical History: A thorough review of your medical background and symptoms to understand the extent and impact of your condition.
  • Physical Examination: A detailed examination to assess your symptoms and rule out other conditions.
  • Blood Tests: Specialized tests to detect autoantibodies (e.g., ANA, anti-dsDNA), inflammation markers, and assess organ function.
  • Imaging Tests: Advanced imaging techniques, such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRI, to evaluate organ involvement and joint damage.
