What is Lupus?

Types of Lupus

1. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) – The most common and severe type, SLE can affect multiple organs, including the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, and blood vessels. Symptoms vary widely and can include fatigue, joint pain, rashes, and serious complications like lupus nephritis.
2. Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE) – A type of lupus that primarily affects the skin. It has several subtypes, including:

• Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE): Causes round, scaly skin lesions that can lead to permanent scarring, often on the face and scalp.
• Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (SCLE): Causes red, ring-shaped or scaly rashes on sun-exposed areas. These lesions are highly photosensitive but typically do not cause scarring.

3. Drug-Induced Lupus (DIL) – A lupus-like condition triggered by certain medications, such as hydralazine, procainamide, isoniazid, and some biologics. Symptoms resemble SLE but are usually milder and resolve after stopping the medication.
4. Neonatal Lupus – A rare condition that affects newborns due to the passive transfer of maternal autoantibodies (anti-Ro/SSA, anti-La/SSB). It can cause a temporary rash, liver abnormalities, and in some cases, congenital heart block, which may be permanent
