Advanced rTMS Treatment in Dubai at Emirates Psychiatry Clinic in partnership with The London Psychiatry Centre. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a ground-breaking procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that has been shown to be effective for depression, even in cases where other treatments have failed.

In two separate studies, the rTMS protocols used by The London Psychiatry Centre, have demonstrated remission rates at 66% and 61%. This is double that of providers using Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) and three times higher than the UK rTMS platinum standard where neuronavigation was used.

The London Psychiatry Centre is a world leader pioneering this highly effective and safe intervention to help overcome treatment resistant depression.

What conditions are treated with rTMS?

  • Depression: rTMS is most commonly used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). It is typically used for people who have not responded to other treatments, such as medication or therapy.
  • OCD: rTMS may also be helpful for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) that has not responded to other treatments.
  • Anxiety: There is evidence that rTMS may be helpful for people with anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD).
  • Other conditions: rTMS is being studied for use in a variety of other conditions, including schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke.

Benefits & Advantages of rTMS Therapy in Dubai

Effectiveness for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD):

  • High success rates for both men and women with TRD.
  • Significant improvement in symptoms within a short period.
  • Long-term maintenance of well-being.

Rapid Recovery and Return to Function:

  • Patients often experience a faster recovery compared to traditional treatments.
  • Ability to return to work or daily activities more quickly.

Safety and Minimal Side Effects:

  • Generally considered a safe procedure with few adverse effects.
  • Low risk of serious side effects.

Non-Invasive Nature:

  • Does not involve surgery or invasive procedures.

Potential for Treating Other Conditions:

  • While primarily used for depression, rTMS is being explored for other conditions like OCD, GAD, and chronic pain.

How is rTMS performed?

During an rTMS treatment, a coil is placed over the scalp near the forehead. The coil generates a magnetic field that passes through the skull and stimulates the underlying nerve cells. The treatment typically lasts for 20-40 minutes and is performed daily for several weeks.

Is rTMS right for me?

If you are considering rTMS, it is important to talk to one of our rTMS team and see if it is right for you. rTMS is not appropriate for everyone, and it is important to weigh the risks and benefits of treatment.

  • rTMS is a non-invasive treatment for depression that has been shown to be effective, even in cases where other treatments have failed.
  • rTMS is generally safe and well-tolerated, with few side effects.
  • rTMS is an approved treatment for depression by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
  • rTMS may not be covered by insurance.

rTMS offers a promising avenue for individuals seeking relief from mental health conditions. With its non-invasive nature and potential for effectiveness, it has the potential to improve the quality of life for many people.

At The London Psychiatry Centre, a remarkable success rate has been achieved in treating Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) with rTMS. Among patients who have undergone rTMS for TRD, 59% of women and 62% of men have experienced full recovery.

*Figure 1a – TLPC Recovery Rates

A study conducted in July 2020 analyzed the outcomes of 252 patients with TRD who had not responded adequately to antidepressant medication. A significant 61% of these patients achieved remission within six weeks, with an average treatment duration of four weeks. Moreover, the majority of responders maintained their well-being for a period of one to twelve months following treatment.

While 35% of patients did not respond to rTMS, 3% experienced a 50% improvement in symptoms, and 1% reported a 75% reduction in symptoms. Importantly, no adverse side effects were observed.

A comparison with the STAR-D protocol, a globally recognized standard for treating resistant depression, further underscores the effectiveness of rTMS. A twelve-month follow-up of STAR-D patients revealed a significantly lower well-being rate of 2.7% compared to the 45% achieved with rTMS and maintenance. This compelling data emphasizes the importance of maintenance rTMS in maximizing long-term recovery.

The rapid and sustained results obtained with rTMS are particularly impressive for patients who have endured years of unrelenting depression. Many patients have reported a return to work within a few weeks of starting treatment, a stark contrast to the average nine-month recovery period associated with traditional approaches like drug therapy, psychotherapy, and ECT.
