An undescended testicle, also known as cryptorchidism, is a common condition in newborn boys, where one or both of the testicles fail to move into the scrotum before birth. This condition affects approximately 3-5% of full-term infants and up to 30% of premature babies. If left untreated, it can lead to complications, including fertility issues and an increased risk of testicular cancer later in life. At Emirates Specialty Hospital, we provide expert pediatric urology care to diagnose and treat undescended testicles effectively, ensuring the health and well-being of your child.

During fetal development, the testicles form inside the abdomen and typically descend into the scrotum just before birth. When one or both testicles fail to descend as expected, the child is diagnosed with an undescended testicle. The condition can affect one or both testicles (unilateral or bilateral cryptorchidism).

In some cases, the testicle may eventually descend into the scrotum within the first few months of life. However, if the testicle has not descended by the time the child is six months old, medical intervention may be necessary.

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Undescended Testicle

An undescended testicle is usually identified during a newborn’s physical examination. In most cases, there are no visible symptoms other than the absence of one or both testicles in the scrotum. Sometimes, the condition may be detected later if it was not noticed at birth, especially if the testicle is high in the abdomen or the groin area.

At Emirates Specialty Hospital, our pediatric urologists conduct a thorough examination to confirm the diagnosis. In some cases, imaging tests like an ultrasound or MRI may be required to locate the undescended testicle if it cannot be felt during the physical exam.

Treatment Options for Undescended Testicle

The primary goal of treatment for an undescended testicle is to move the testicle into the scrotum, where it can develop and function normally. This can help preserve fertility, reduce the risk of testicular cancer, and promote proper development.

  • Watchful Waiting: For newborns, if the testicle has not descended but is expected to do so on its own within the first few months of life, our specialists may recommend a period of observation.
  • Orchiopexy: If the testicle has not descended by six months, surgery is the most common treatment option. Orchiopexy is a minimally invasive procedure performed by our expert pediatric urologists. During the surgery, the undescended testicle is carefully moved into the scrotum and secured in place. The procedure is highly successful, with minimal recovery time.
  • Hormonal Therapy: In rare cases, hormonal therapy may be used to stimulate the testicle’s descent. This is generally less effective than surgery and is not commonly recommended unless specific circumstances exist.
