Are you aware there is an option to remain awake and comfortable during shoulder surgery? Regional anesthesia under the right circumstances is an option (where the patient for shoulder surgery remains awake and comfortable throughout the procedure).
General anaesthesia is very safe but some patients have a phobia and are terrified of the thought of not waking up from sleep. In select cases there is an option of regional anesthesia for shoulder surgery. This approach has several advantages, including faster recovery and fewer side effects compared to regional anesthesia.
Furthermore as illustrated in the case of this patient, the doctor had the ability to actively engage with the patient during the surgery, reassuring them everything was going well as planned.
Careful management, optimal draping, and an experienced team are required.
However this approach does require the careful management of anxiety and discomfort, as an apprehensive patient may make it more difficult to maintain a calm and relaxed state. To improve the experience, the draping system can indeed be optimized to prevent the patient’s face from being obscured or claustrophobic, which can exacerbate feelings of anxiety.
Combining effective communication, sedation as needed, and a thoughtful draping strategy can make the experience more positive for patients, potentially turning a stressful situation into something that they view as an empowering and unique experience.
