In this case, a patient presented in my clinic with chronic knee pain having had a total knee replacement in their home country prior. It was immediately clear from a medical examination that the knee had unfortunately become infected. In this scenario I recommended what we call a 2 stage revision knee replacement. This involves 2 separate operations.
First Stage – Involves removing the infected implant and inserting a temporary antibiotic-impregnated cement spacer.
Second Stage – Involves removing the temporary spacer and implanting the new permanent knee implant/prosthesis.
The patient is now happy, and can walk pain free and returned home to Egypt.
