Lactose intolerance may be avoided by using the following dietary strategies:
Whole milk in very small quantities may be better tolerated than low fat milk.
Heated milk products such as soup, custard or puddings may be better tolerated than the cold milk products.
Varieties of cheese such as Cheddar, Parmesan and Cottage Cheese may be better tolerated due to its low lactose content.
When restricting milk and milk products try to include plenty of other sources of calcium in your diet such as dark green leafy vegetables, canned fish with fine bones ( such as sardines and salmons ) and dry beans.
Read labels and watch out for words like milk solids, whey, skim milk powder / solids, milk sugar, lactalbumin and lactglobulin which means that lactose is present.
For STRICT LACTOSE FREE diet, do not even attempt foods which indicate a low lactose content.
When dining out make sure you order foods which have absolutely NO MILK and MILK PRODUCTS added.
