Instructions for Lactose Intolerance
Lactose intolerance may be avoided by using the following dietary strategies:
- Whole milk in very small quantities may be better tolerated than low fat milk.
- Heated milk products such as soup, custard or puddings may be better tolerated than the cold milk products.
- Varieties of cheese such as Cheddar, Parmesan and Cottage Cheese may be better tolerated due to its low lactose content.
- When restricting milk and milk products try to include plenty of other sources of calcium in your diet such as dark green leafy vegetables, canned fish with fine bones ( such as sardines and salmons ) and dry beans.
- Read labels and watch out for words like milk solids, whey, skim milk powder / solids, milk sugar, lactalbumin and lactglobulin which means that lactose is present.
- For STRICT LACTOSE FREE diet, do not even attempt foods which indicate a low lactose content.
- When dining out make sure you order foods which have absolutely NO MILK and MILK PRODUCTS added.
