Gynaecologic oncology includes ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, cervical cancer and anything on the female reproductive system. The cause of most cervical cancer cases is the Human Papillomavirus Infection (HPV) and other related risk factors including smoking, birth control pills, a weak immune system and matters of sexual activity. A cervical screening can identify the disease and, if suspected, a biopsy is done.

For early stage gynaecological cancer, a minimally invasive procedure such as laparoscopic surgery can be done. It decreases the chances of infection, scarring and the length of hospital stay.

It is still possible to reproduce after some gynaecologic oncology procedures. Some women have the option of undergoing fertility-sparing treatment depending on the stage of the cancer, the type of cancer, the patient’s age and their fertility goals. Cryopreservation enables a woman to freeze her eggs or embryos so that it’s possible to have biological children following cancer surgery.

However, for advanced stage ovarian or cervical cancer, doctors may be required to perform a radical hysterectomy surgery. The most common type of ovarian cancer is ovarian epithelial cancer, which begins in the tissue covering the ovaries. Other ovarian cancers include the less common ovarian germ cell tumour.

In order to remove cancerous tumours in gynaecological surgeries, a debulking method is necessary. Also known as radical cytoreductive surgery, it can involve the removal of organs in their entirety in order to manage large cancerous masses. This type of procedure largely increases the survival rate of uterine cancer or ovarian cancer sufferers.
