The thyroid is located in the front of the neck and affects the metabolic rate and protein synthesis of the body. The parathyroid is located at the back of the main thyroid gland and as it is related to the endocrine system, controls the development of the body, mood and functioning. It helps the body use calcium from bones when levels in the blood are too low.

Patients who might have thyroid and parathyroid cancer complain of pain in the bones, stomach or upper back from kidney problems. Excessive urination, ulcers in the small intestine and a lump in the neck are also symptoms of thyroid and parathyroid cancer.

Thyroid and parathyroid surgery can involve removing all or part of the butterfly-shaped gland that helps regulate the body’s metabolism.

Patients are put under anaesthesia to ensure they don’t experience pain and discomfort throughout the operation. Doctors at the Emirates Specialty Hospital will also guide patients on the steps they should take before surgery to reduce downtime and ensure a quicker recovery, including the appropriate food and drink to consume or medication to take and avoid.

Treatments include minimal incision thyroidectomy, which can be performed in a timely manner and patients may leave as early as the same day, after careful analysis from radiology. If one or two lobes of the thyroid need to be removed, a lobectomy is performed, and in cases where the cancer has spread or depending on the location of the tumour, lymph nodes may need to be taken out, as well as the tissue around the thyroid.

While patients will experience soreness in the neck and changes in the voice after the thyroid surgery, doctors will provide the necessary medication or aftercare advice (especially if there’s a drain set up at the incision for a short while following). For patients having the whole thyroid removed, hormone therapy may be necessary as a way of life after the operation. The thyroid stimulating hormone medicine helps to tell the body to stop producing more of the same cells.  Radioactive iodine ablation uses the thyroids need to absorb iodine to send radiation out to destroy any leftover cancerous thyroid tissue.

Other radiation treatments include external beam or X-ray and targeted therapy through pills or chemotherapy, intravenously.
