Surgery of Laryngeal Cancer

What is throat cancer?

An organ in the throat that separates the breathing and esophagus is called “larynx”. Sound is produced here. At the same time, the larynx is an important part of the respiratory system. It prevents the food from escaping to the trachea during swallowing. Malignant mass diseases of the larynx region are called “larynx cancer”.

Laryngeal cancers occur mostly in the glottis region. Glottis is the name given to the beginning of the larynx, where the trachea and vocal cords are located.

What are the types of larynx cancer?

o   Hypopharyngeal cancer (laryngopharyngeal cancer); It begins in the hypopharynx (laryngopharynx), which is just below the esophagus and trachea, in the lower part of your throat.

o   Glottis cancer; starts on the vocal cords.

o   Supraglottic cancer; It begins in the upper part of the larynx and includes cancer that affects epiglottis, a piece of cartilage that prevents food from escaping into your trachea.

o   Subglottic cancer; It starts at the bottom of your throat, under the vocal cords.

What are the symptoms of throat cancer?

  •         Hoarseness lasting more than 3 weeks
  •         Difficulty in swallowing
  •         Weight loss
  •         Shortness of Breath
  •         Feeling of lump or swelling in the throat
  •         Tiredness
  •         Bad breath
  •         Earache

There are 4 stages in throat cancer:

  • Stage I: It is a very early stage. Cancer cells are only in the inner lining of the larynx. It has not yet spread to the surrounding tissues.
  • Stage II: Early-stage larynx cancer. The tumor is small and did not overflow the throat.
  • Stage III: The tumor is larger and can affect one of the vocal cords. In addition, the tumor may have grown into the inner part of the epiglottic valve or thyroid gland located in the upper part of the larynx.
  • Stage IV: This is the last stage of throat cancer. The tumor may have spread to the thyroid gland, trachea, or trachea outside of the larynx.

Surgery

The surgical step to be determined for the treatment of throat cancer varies according to the location of the cancer cells and the stage of cancer.

  • Surgery for early-stage laryngeal cancer: Throat cancer, which is limited to the surface of the larynx or vocal cords, can be treated with endoscopic surgery. The doctor inserts a hollow endoscope into the larynx and then advances special surgical instruments or a laser through it. Using these surgical instruments, the doctor can remove very superficial cancers by scraping or cutting them, or if they use a laser, they can evaporate cancer.
  • Surgery where all or part of the larynx is removed: For smaller tumors, the doctor removes the most affected part of the larynx by removing the part affected by cancer. The doctor tries to maintain talents such as normal speech, swallowing, and breathing.

• Surgery where cancerous lymph nodes are removed (neck dissection): If the larynx cancer spreads deep into your neck, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove some or all of the lymph nodes to see if they contain cancer cells.
