Boasting an excellent team of highly qualified staff, makes choosing Emirates Specialty Hospital mean the right choice and best care for your sarcoma & melanoma cancer surgery needs, in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).Sarcoma cancer is a rare type that develops in the body’s tissues or connective cells (such as bone, muscle, cartilage and fat, or of the vascular or hematopoietic system) and, deriving from the Greek language, describes a cancer of the flesh.

Depending on the area affected, sarcoma can be known as chondrosarcoma (cartilage), leiomyosarcoma (smooth muscle), osteosarcoma (bone) or liposarcoma (fat). Including Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST), sufferers complain of symptoms ranging from trouble swallowing or stomach pain to bleeding anywhere from the mouth to the anus. When leading to iron-deficiency, the anaemic effect can cause shortness of breath, pale skin and episodes of passing out.

Melanoma describes cancer of the pigment cells and most commonly can be found on the back or legs. Symptoms may include the change in colour, size, appearance or feeling of a mole. The most dangerous type of melanoma is present in areas that have become firm to touch and elevated above the skin while growing. To prevent this type of cancer, it’s advised that ultraviolet ray (UV) exposure is minimised and that the immune system is kept in top form, however some genetic predispositions, such as pigmentosum and xeroderma, put patients at higher risk.

Despite everyone being advised to wear sunscreen as a preventative measure, those with fair skin and red hair, or with over 50 moles in their body, are recommended to take extra precaution.

Our oncology doctors can assess whether the stages of melanoma and sarcoma cancer are early or advanced, as they are expertly skilled in identifying the behavioural characteristics and frequency of the malignant cells. Doctors can advise on the appropriate plan of action for low, medium or high-grade sarcomas and melanoma, including skin biopsies, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Less common but most effectively, Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) can also be done at the hospital, and is performed using a double-ended tool to target the narrow area.

Doctors at the Emirates Specialty Hospital will also guide patients on the steps they should take before surgery to reduce downtime and ensure a quicker recovery.
