Pediatric Trauma

Children and adults are very different from each other, both anatomically and physiologically. Intervention towards childhood trauma is very important, risky and challenging for the doctor. Because, besides anatomical and physiological differences, they are quite different from adults in terms of emotional and developmental issues. The success of the treatment as a result of childhood traumas depends on the fact that the treatment is carried out by specialists in child trauma centers. Even intervention at any hospital may not be as successful as an intervention at the trauma center. Especially if we consider those who cannot reach the healthcare institution, unfortunately, it is probable that trauma will result in death.During the child’s growth process, the type of trauma that may be exposed varies depending on the age it is in.

  • Trauma occurring at birth: Conditions such as bleeding and minor fractures, damage to the brachial plexus under the membranes of the scalp or skull bones may occur during delivery.
  • Traumas occurring in infancy: Because of a momentary absence of people responsible for the care of the baby, it is situations such as the baby falling from a height, hitting somewhere and injuring. Fracture and bleeding conditions are rarely seen. They are mostly mild injuries. If there is no direct blow to the head and the child is acting as usual, it is often thought that there is no problem. It is recommended to keep track of their movements by not sleeping for a few hours. If the child is restless, is asleep even though it is not the sleeping hour, suddenly starts to vomit or has a seizure, a healthcare provider should be urgently applied.
  • Childhood traumas: Childhood is the period when they are very active and careless. They communicate more with the outside world. Activities such as playing in the park, cycling, running, playing ball, climbing trees can sometimes cause falls and injuries. “How high will it be a problem if the child falls?” It is not possible to answer such a question with a precise amount of measure because it is important that the surface it hits as well as the height it falls on and exactly where the head hits during impact. While falling from a low place can lead to serious disability, it is possible to fall from a very high position and get rid of minor scratches. In addition, child abuse is sometimes encountered as a cause of traumatic injuries. Unfortunately, throwing the child somewhere in anger, hitting the child with a hard object and beating are among the encountered situations. As a result of all these injuries, skull fractures or brain bleeding may occur. In these situations that require surgical operation from time to time, it is sometimes sufficient to just supervise them. In a child who has had a concussion, increasingly aggravated headaches, confusion, vomiting, restlessness, seizures, drowsiness are symptoms that need attention and be admitted to the hospital.

There are measures that can be taken to prevent injuries. For example, if you are going to ride a bicycle or skateboard, a helmet and knee pad can be worn.
